05/13/2010 - Daily Prayer

The celebrated Southern writer, Lillian Smith, wrote about the necessary values of life. She wrote:
The unpardonable sin for every human being is to have more knowledge than understanding, more power than love; to know more about the earth than the people who live in it; to invent quick means of travel to faraway places when the one cannot grope one’s way within one’s own heart. For freedom is a dreadful thing unless it goes hand in hand with responsibility.
Freedom is both a fragile thing and the source of our strength. True freedom brings with it the obligation to act responsibly and to do what is in our power to preserve freedom not only for ourselves, but for all humanity.
May our understanding of freedom be infused with love and compassion, a sensitivity to others and an awareness of self. And may the Source of Life inspire us to always act with responsibility and thoughtfulness. May this be God’s will.--Amen.
