Prayer Offered for January 14, 2022

We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality,

tied in a single garment of destiny.

Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly.

These were the words of Dr. Martin Luther King in the Letter from a Birmingham Jail April 16, 1963.

(“Letter from Birmingham Jail” by Martin Luther King, Jr.)

Merciful and compassionate God, these words of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, resonate with us as we remember and celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King.

Be with us this year as we work in solidarity with each other, adding our voices to the voices of those who still struggle daily for justice and equality.

May we recognize and respond to “the fierce urgency of now” as we encounter crisis upon crisis in our moving toward loving one another.

Help us understand that in this time, we are integral to helping birth the future from the crucible of the past and the present.

Gracious God, as we intensify our desire to live with integrity of word and deed, help us continue to grow into that network of mutuality that forges our unity and brings us to honor the life and time of Dr. Martin Luther King.—AMEN.
