Merciful and ever-loving Creator, once again, we begin a new year in the western world—a new year of hope, where we remember that it is better to light one candle than to curse the darkness. So, we pray for our legislators that as they commit to work for the common good, they will, in the words of Howard Thurman:
Light many candles this [New Year]:
Candles of joy, despite all sadness.
Candles of hope, where despair keeps watch.
Candles of courage, for fears ever present.
Candles of peace, for tempest-tossed days.
Candles of grace, to ease heavy burdens.
Candles of love, to inspire all their living.
Candles that will burn all the year long.
Gracious God, we thank You for all the blessings You will impart to our lives this year.—AMEN.
