Teach us Your ways, O God,
That we may be open to that same Spirit
Who moved over the face of the waters
On that first day of creation,
And moves also over the chaos of these times
To fashion a day like this
A world like ours
A life like ours.

Teach us Your ways, O God,
That we may heed the exhortations of the prophets
And practice them toward the hungry of the world,
The poor and sick and oppressed,
That we may learn the healing humility
Which responsibly tends the earth
And all creatures therein.

We ask this in Your name.─AMEN.

Eternal God, lead us now out of the familiar setting of our doubts and fears,
Beyond our pride and our need to be secure,
Into a strange and graceful ease with our true proportions and with Yours,
That in boundless silence
We may grow strong enough to endure
And flexible enough to share Your grace.─AMEN.

In the words of writer and composer Adele Getty....
O Great Spirit, earth, sun, sky and sea...You are within and all around me
O Great Spirit, dawn before the day, stir us within to hear You as we pray.
Still speaking God, we are thankful and grateful for another opportunity to be better
human beings and to make a difference in our world. We are grateful to know that all
lives matter and all are significant in Your sight.
We give thanks for those who toil and work within the walls of this chamber, to write,
review, debate and vote on legislation that provides substance, hope and calls to action
to improve the lives of the people of this great state and nation.
Remind us that our common denominator is our humanity; remind us that the glass is
always half full and not half empty. Empower our leaders to stand on the side of justice
and to extend abundant grace to colleagues, constituents, comrades and confidants.
O Great Spirit, earth, sun, sky and sea, stir us within to hear you as we pray.
Grant wisdom and understanding; courage and perseverance to run and not faint; to
walk and not get weary. As the puritans proclaimed years ago, "there is more light" -
there is always more to know and more to do.
During these challenging times, as our leaders face difficult decisions, give them the
capacity to expand in vision and direction; to extend the olive branch over and over
again. And when the work is done in this lifetime, we pray that we will know without
shadows of doubt that we did our best; that we did as the prophet Micah admonished, to
do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with our God.
Blessed be; let it be so, ashe, and─AMEN!

Gracious and loving God, we gather today conscious that Your Spirit of Wisdom moves in each of us,

As it has moved in all people since the beginning of human life.

May we be wise in our sharing and ready to listen to each other.

May we be open to learning where new insights and knowledge may take us,

While drawing on wisdom that stands the test of time.

May we be courageous enough to discard whatever can no longer sustain us,

And allow your Spirit to flow clearly and graciously as we work to do your will.─Amen.

Recently Pope Francis said that politics is a lofty vocation and one of the highest forms of charity, inasmuch as it seeks the common good.

God of all love and consolation,

Continue to grace us with insight and wisdom to promote the continual evolution of life-giving relationships.

May miracles of love and generosity continue to flow from our desire to further peace and justice in our world.

May we continue to trust that beneath all appearances is meaning, direction, and promise as You kindle in us the fire of Your own unfolding dreams.

We ask this in Your name.─Amen

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

(Psalm 23,  King James Version)

            Let us pray

Heavenly Father, thank you so much for this opportunity to be alive, and well, and to serve in the Senate. We pray for the membership of the Senate, for the Legislature, for both bodies, the Assembly and the Senate, the Governor, and for this opportunity that we have to serve the citizens of the State of California. We are grateful for that opportunity and ask that You watch over us, guide us, and direct us. Bless our families.─AMEN.

God of Generosity and Magnanimity,

It is as Giver of Gifts that we first come to know You.

Creation in all its beauty and glory,

Life with all its possibility, sorrow and joy,

all is gift.

And through these gifts we are brought into being

and come to know You as the Supreme Giver.

Yes, You have gifted us

and we know You will continue to gift us.

So it is that this day we approach You

with trust and confidence.

We ask again that You give us what we need.

Bless this deliberative body with wisdom and insight.

Give this Senate Your vision.

Show us the course that will be of greatest benefit

For all the people we serve.

Give also to this Senate courage and will.

Show us the way to implement the vision

You place in our hearts.

We make this prayer to You,

as this new day of deliberation and service begins.

May Your generous and loving spirit

inspire this Senate

today and everyday.─AMEN.

Dear God, thank You for this day and the opportunity to serve in the Legislature. We pray for every member here in the Legislature, for the Governor, for our families, and for our friends. We pray especially for the horrific massacre in South Carolina and the impacted families and the impact on our nation. That our nation will remain one and that we will be one in spirit and across all racial lines; that those will diminish and we would serve as one within our nation.

I’d like to close this prater with a reading from Matthew, Chapter 10: Verses 3-10:

Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace, Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.─AMEN.

God of many unanswered questions, as we prepare for the road of vacation this summer, help us to go forth in freedom: the freedom of knowing that our work has promoted the common good of California; the freedom to trust that what is still undone is held in Your caring hands; and the freedom to allow the questions in our hearts to keep us alert to new possibilities.

Give us eyes, not just for the road, but for our companions on the road as well, so that together we understand Your need for our faith and trust, as we line into mystery and surprise.─AMEN.

Today, I’d like to refer back to the prayer that Fr. Greg Boyle offered on December 1, 2014.  He gave us lots to reflect on so I “pilfered” a few of his thoughts as follows:

The prophet Habakkuk writes: The vision still has its time, presses on to fulfillment, and it will not disappoint.  If it delays, wait for it, for it will surely come (2:3).

God of love and compassion, whose vision for us is kinship with each other, whose love is without measure and without regret, guide us to be in the world who You are- compassionate, loving, and kind.  Help us to measure our success not only in our service of those on the margins, but also in our willingness to see ourselves in kinship with them. May we continue to widen our circle of compassion so that nobody is standing outside that circle. Grant us this day and always Your way of seeing, so that we can obliterate the illusion that we are separate.  For Your vision still has its time and presses on to fulfillment.─AMEN.

The Guest House

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
As an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they're a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

(Rumi, The Guest House)

Loving God, help us to approach this day with awareness, gratitude, and joy.─AMEN.

I wonder how you envision God! The following quote is from Tom Mahon, a Silicon Valley executive who writes about spiritual issues in relation to technology. He says: Instead of picturing God as a medieval monarch on a marble throne, imagine God as the living awareness in the space between the atoms, empty space that makes up about 99.99% of the universe.  Thinking of God that way gets us past some of the great theological divides of the past: Is God immanent or transcendent, internal or external, composed or compassionate? Like the question of whether the atom is wave or particle, the answer is: YES.

(Adapted from Tom Mahon, The Spirit in Technology.)

God of mystery, You who are all in all:

we constantly call out to You for help;

we sometimes remember to thank You for the blessings of our lives;

grant us the ability to often pause in wonder at Your mystery, Your elusive presence, Your seeming ongoing invitation to us to grow in self-awareness, humility, hope, and courage, as we work to bring love and compassion to our world.─AMEN.

The group Seals and Crofts has a song that begins: Darling, if you want me to be closer to you, get closer to me.  Can you imagine God singing that to you?  It echoes the Book of James where he says: Draw near to God and God will draw near to you (James 4:8).

The Sufi poet Abu Sa’id (967-1049) tells us how:

If you wish to draw near to God,

Seek God in the hearts around you.

Speak well of all, present or absent.

If you would be a light for others,

Be like the sun: show the same face to all.

To bring joy to a single heart is better

Than building countless shrines for worship;

To capture one heart through kindness is better

Than setting a thousand free.

This is the true lover of God,

Who lives with others,

Rises and eats and sleeps like others,

Gives and takes in the bazaar,

Yet never forgets God even for a moment.

Gracious God, fill us with Your joy as we continue to draw closer to You.─AMEN.

A Prayer for Our Earth

All-powerful God, You are present in the whole universe and in the smallest of Your creatures.

You embrace with Your tenderness all that exists.

Pour out upon us the power of Your love,

that we may protect life and beauty.

Fill us with peace, that we may live

as brothers and sisters, harming no one.

O God of the poor,

help us to rescue the abandoned and forgotten of this earth, so precious in your eyes.

Bring healing to our lives,

that we may protect the world and not prey on it,

that we may sow beauty, not pollution and destruction. Touch the hearts

of those who look only for gain

at the expense of the poor and the earth.

Teach us to discover the worth of each thing,

to be filled with awe and contemplation,

to recognize that we are profoundly united

with every creature

as we journey towards Your infinite light.

We thank You for being with us each day.

Encourage us, we pray, in our struggle

for justice, love and peace.-AMEN.

The poet Gerard Manley Hopkins says that “the world is charged with the grandeur of God.”  As we forge ahead with the work of government,

Let us keep in mind the blessings of summer recess- the places where we experienced God’s grandeur- perhaps

In sun and surf and sandy beaches,

In wind and rain and rainbow hues,

In midnight skies and Perseid Showers,

In places of worship and monuments to our past history.

Let us remember the people we encountered- family, friends, and kindly strangers who assisted us along the way.

God of elegance and beauty, help us to notice the grandeur of your creation in our daily lives. May we see your face in the colleagues we engage with, attending to our commitments, in the presence of your Spirit, which “broods over the bent world with bright wings.”─AMEN.

Today’s prayer is taken from Psalm 19:

The heavens are telling the glory of God;

And their expanse is declaring the work of God’s hands.

There is no speech, nor are there words; their voice is not heard,

Yet their music goes out through all the earth,

And their utterances to the end of the world….

The law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul;

But who can discern their own weaknesses?

Acquit us, O Lord, from our hidden faults….

Let our fears not have dominion over us.

Then shall we become a beneficial presence,

Freely and fully surrendered to Your Love.

Loving God, may the words of our mouths and the meditations of our hearts

Be acceptable in Your sight this day.─AMEN.

We turn toward the light of loving-kindness to direct us.

We bow deeply to the Awakened One and to our spiritual ancestors.

Today we begin anew to purify and free our hearts.

With immeasurable compassion to help humankind, we resolve to live beautifully.

May our heart’s garden of awakening bloom with hundreds of flowers.

May mountains and rivers be our witness in this moment as we bow our heads and request the Lord of Compassion to embrace us all.─AMEN.

Loving God,

You have made us known to friends whom we knew not.

You have given us seats in homes not our own.

You have brought the distant near and made a brother/sister of the stranger.

We are uneasy at heart when we have to leave our accustomed shelter;

We forget that there abides the old in the new, and that there also you abide.

Through birth and death, in this world or in others, wherever you lead us…

You link our hearts with bonds of joy to the unfamiliar.

When one knows You, then alien there is none, then no door is shut.

Oh, grant us our prayer that we may never lose the bliss of the touch of the One in the play of the Many.

As we begin the work of the new year, I invite you to ponder the words of Howard Thurman (1899–1981):

When the song of the angels is stilled,
When the star in the sky is gone,
When the kings and princes are home,
When the shepherds are back with their flock,
Then the [real work] begins:
To find the lost,
To heal the broken,
To feed the hungry,
To release the prisoner,
To rebuild the nation, [and the State],
To bring peace among people,
To make music in the heart.

This is the work that you are about in this Senate; and for the days to come, I pray:

May the Lord bless you and keep you.

May God’s face shine upon you, and be gracious to you.

May God look upon you kindly and give you peace.—Amen.

In his Letter from Birmingham Jail, Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. stated, “I have tried to make it clear that it is wrong to use immoral means to attain moral ends. But now I must affirm that it is just as wrong, or even more, to use moral means to preserve immoral ends.”

Today let us pray in the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.:

O God, we thank You for the fact that You have inspired men and women in all nations and in all cultures.

We call You different names: some call You Allah; some call You Elohim; some call You Jehovah; some call You Brahma; some call You the Unmoved Mover. But we know that these are all names for one and the same God.

Grant that we will follow You and become so committed to Your way and Your kingdom:

that we will be able to establish in our lives and in this world a brotherhood and sisterhood;

that we will be able to establish here a kingdom of understanding, where men and women will live together as brothers and sisters and respect the dignity and worth of every human being, even our enemy neighbors.

And we ask You, God, in these days of emotional tension, when the problems of the world are gigantic in extent and chaotic in detail, to be with us in our going out and our coming in, in our rising up and in our lying down, in our moments of joy and in our moments of sorrow, until the day when there shall be no sunset and no dawn.─AMEN.

Father, Mother, God, thank You for Your presence during the hard and mean days; for then we have You to lean upon.

Thank You for Your presence during the bright and sunny days; for then we can share that which we have with those who have less.

And thank You for Your presence during the Holy Days; for then we are able to celebrate You, and our families, and our friends.

For those who have no voice, we ask You to speak.

For those who feel unworthy, we ask You to pour out Your love in waterfalls of tenderness.

For those who live in pain, we ask You to bathe them in the river of Your healing.

For those who are lonely, we ask You to keep them company.

For those who are depressed, we ask You to shower upon them the light of hope.

Loving Creator, Let the rain come and wash away the ancient grudges….

Let the rain wash away the memory of the hurt, the neglect.

Then let the sun come out and fill the sky with rainbows.

Let the warmth of the sun heal us wherever we are broken.

Let it burn away the fog so that we can see each other clearly-

So that we can see beyond labels, beyond accents, gender or skin color….

Let the light of the sun be so strong that we will see all people as our neighbors.

Let the earth, nourished by rain, bring forth flowers to surround us with beauty.

Harriet Tubman said: Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.
Divine Mystery and Presence, Harriet Tubman did not hesitate to reach for the star of freedom to pass it on to others. We ask that You awaken us to the dream that You are dreaming in us this day.
Give us the strength to reach beyond the seemingly overwhelming challenges of the present.
Give us the patience to wait for that which does not yet seem possible.
And give us the passion to forge our commitment to the future through our collaboration with one another. We ask this in Your name. --AMEN.

Distinguished Senators, guests, members of the dais and the public that allows us all to serve; we greet you. We greet you as is our tradition:
            With the Name of G-d
            Peace be unto you
            As Salaam Alaikum
Today, you, as leaders of our state face numerous challenges that affect the future of our citizens. As you face these challenges, there are two things we ask you to consider. First, as Helen Hoover says: “Man thinks of himself as a creator instead of a user, and this delusion is robbing him of the earth.” Let us remember we are stewards of G-d’s earth not the creators of this earth. Your work as stewards determines all of our futures. Second, the Holy Quran has a phrase that is often repeated: “Which of the favors of your lord will you deny?” (S. 55 verse 13, 16…etc) This is a reminder of the need for us as human beings to be aware of and grateful for the simple blessings, like water and air, that G-d has given us. Let us all remember to be grateful for all the things that our Lord has blessed us with. In closing, we ask G-d’s mercy and guidance for all your deliberations and decision making.—AMEN.

O God, we thank thee for this universe, our great home; for its vastness and its riches, and for the manifold life which teems upon it and of which we are a part.
We praise thee for the arching sky and the blessed winds, for the driving clouds and the constellations on high.
We praise thee for the salt sea and the running water, for the everlasting hills, for the trees, and for the grass under our feet.
We thank thee for our senses by which we can see the splendor of the morning, and hear the songs of birds, and enjoy the smells on springtime.
Grant us, we pray, a heart wide open to all this joy and beauty, and save our souls from being steeped in care or so darkened by passion that we pass heedless and unseeing when even the thorn-bush by the wayside is aflame with the glory of God. -AMEN.

The following short poem is by Mary Oliver, from Why I Wake Early (2004):

            Song of the Builders

On a summer morning I sat down on a hillside

to think about God - a worthy pastime.

            Near me, I saw a single cricket;

it was moving the grains of the hillside

            this way and that way.

How great was its energy, how humble its effort.

Let us hope it will always be like this,

            each of us going on

            in our inexplicable ways

            building the universe.

Creator of Mystery and Wonder, grant that this day we may go about our work with the humility of the cricket and the joy of being human.

We ask this in Your name.—AMEN.

Long ago, it was written: When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established, what are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them? (Ps 8.3-4)

In matters great and small, we have been entrusted by the citizens of this great state to serve the public good, to care for those who have no voice, and to shape a more just and loving society:

Let us bow our heads and pray, Almighty and eternal God, maker of all that is seen and unseen. We pray you to care gently for these public servants as they embrace the responsibility to lead our Golden State. May they be courageous in principle, judicious in action, and may they guided by the desire to labor for the greater good. Help us live and work in a manner worthy of this trust.

Make manifest your love and care for all gathered here. Bless these public servants and all who ease the burden of their work. Bless all those whom they love and bless all who are less fortunate than we.

Inspire all who hear this prayer, Lord God, to act in the face of injustice, to share generously when confronted by need, to be the hands of your work and witnesses of your compassion. And help us to discern the course that will bring us lasting joy in our world of constant change.

So let this be our benediction: “May the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, guard your hearts and your minds” (Phil 3.7), this day and always, now and forever.—AMEN.

I search for You, O God, always elusive and hidden.

I long to dwell in the heart of Mystery.

I search for my true self, more of who I already am,

Knowing there’s so much yet to be discovered.

I search for vision in the shadows of my soul,

Impatiently waiting the moment of lighting.

I search for a quiet heart amid life’s harried schedule;

My soul cries out, yearning for solitude.

I search for Home, always for Home,

Unaware, of course, that I am already there.-AMEN.

The Lord is my pace-setter; I shall not rush,

God helps me stop and rest for quiet intervals.

He provides me with images of stillness,

            Which restores my serenity.

            God leads me in the way of efficiency through calmness of mind;

            God’s guidance is peace.

Even though I have many things to accomplish today,

And crisis may pile upon crisis,

            I will not fall apart for God’s presence is here;

God’s timelessness will keep me in balance.

God prepares refreshment and renewal in the midst of my activities.

Invite us to discover Your presence in each person that we meet, and in every event that we encounter. Teach us when to speak and when to listen, when to ponder and when to share. In moments of challenge and decision, attune our hearts to the whisperings of Your Wisdom. As we undertake ordinary and unnoticed tasks, gift us with simple joy. When our day goes well, may we rejoice. When it grows difficult, surprise us with new possibilities. When life is overwhelming, call us to Sabbath moments to restore Your Peace and Harmony.             On October 19, 1796 in his farewell address, George Washington said the following: It will be worthy of a free, enlightened, and… great Nation, to give to mankind the magnanimous…example of a People always guided by an exalted justice and benevolence.

Gracious and loving God, we pray today in thanksgiving for the leadership of our first president, George Washington.  In a time of great upheaval, he laid a foundation of liberty and democracy for the benefit of future generations.

Today we are still leaning into the meaning of liberty and justice for all, as the legislators of our time strive to be guided by the ideal of exalted justice.

Be with the legislators in this chamber as they pursue the dream of peace and harmony amid the details and decisions of the moment.  May their constituents also embrace the responsibilities of democracy so that together we can build a just and productive society, fulfilling the desires set forth by the founders of our country.             Gracious and loving Creator, in these days when trees and flowers are blooming in profusion, give us renewed hope in our ability to mend the brokenness of our world, because in the words of  Denise Levertov’s poem, Beginners:

… we have only begun to love the earth.

We have only begun to imagine the fullness of life.

How could we tire of hope?—so much is in bud.

How can desire fail?—we have only begun to imagine justice and mercy,

only begun to envision how it might be to live as siblings with beast and flower, not as oppressors.

Surely our river cannot already be hastening into the sea of nonbeing?

Surely it cannot drag, in the silt, all that is innocent?

Not yet, not yet—there is too much broken that must be mended,

too much hurt we have done to each other that cannot yet be forgiven.

We have only begun to know the power that is in us

if we would join our solitudes in the communion of struggle.

So much is unfolding that must complete its gesture,

            so much is in bud.—AMEN.

Last Tuesday, Astronaut Scott Kelly came back to earth after 340 days in space.  He came back a different man. He actually grew two inches due to the lack of gravity in space.  He now stands taller.

Being height challenged myself, I am intrigued by this endeavor.  But sometimes in our lives we are called to stand taller for great causes.

Malala, who was shot by the Taliban, once said: “Once I had asked God for one or two more inches in height but instead he made me as tall as the sky, so high that I could not measure myself…by giving me this height to reach people, he has also given me great responsibilities.”

My dear senators, you have been given a great responsibility within these chambers—to reach the sky and help every Californian to stand taller.

Gracious and loving God, we pray for our California Senators and for the deliberations that will take place today.  We pray that the conversations that will be had, the decisions that will be made, and the votes that will be cast help all of us stand taller. This prayer we pray.—AMEN.

On and ordinary day in 1958, the monk Thomas Merton was running errands for the monastery in Louisville, Kentucky when he was suddenly overwhelmed with the realization that he loved all those busy people on the street; that even though they were total strangers, he felt liberated from the illusory idea that they were separate. He wished that everyone could have that experience, but, he said, “There is no way of telling people that they are all walking around shining like the sun.”

Divine Mystery, as we proceed with our work this week. we ask you

-to focus our vision to see each person bathed in your light and love;

-to sharpen our hearing to listen for words that offer solutions and hope;

-and to quicken our steps to move with patient expectation toward voices that challenge.

Disturb us, Lord, when with the abundance of things we possess

Help me to take responsibility for my own life,
So that I can be free at last.

And the land is coming up green,

Unfolding outside our well-drawn boundaries and urgent schedules.

And the mother birds are busy in manger nests,

And we are learning again that “for everything there is a season,

And a time to every purpose under heaven.”

O Lord, you have sketched the lines of spring.

Gracious and loving God, may we work this day as if everything depends on us, and pray as if everything depends on You. The following poem by Wendell Berry is called This Day.

Whatever is foreseen in joy

Must be lived out from day to day,

Vision held open in the dark

By our ten thousand days of work.

Harvest will fill the barn; for that

The hand must ache, the face must sweat.

And yet no leaf or grain is filled

By work of ours; the field is tilled

And left to grace. That we may reap,

Great work is done while we’re asleep.

When we work well, a Sabbath mood

Rests on our day, and finds it good.—AMEN.

The following poem by Rumi is dedicated to those who sometimes get tired of being good!

Pay close attention to your mean thoughts.

That sourness may be a blessing, as an overcast day brings rain on the roses,

     And relief to dry soil.

Don’t look so sourly on your sourness.

It may be that it’s carrying what you most deeply need and want.

What seems to be keeping you from joy may be what leads you to joy.

Don’t call it a dead branch; call it the live moist root.

Don’t always be waiting to see what’s behind it; that wait-and-see poisons your spirit.

Reach for it; hold your meanness to your chest as a healing root,

     And be through with waiting.

Creator of All That Is, help us to know today that Your deepest desires are being accomplished in and through us.—AMEN.

Heavenly Father, we thank You for granting us this day to gather in the spirit of friendship and fellowship with the esteemed members of the California State Senate to commemorate the 101st anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

As we remember the 1.5 million Armenians who perished at the hands of the Ottoman Turks, we remember also all past and present victims of bloodshed and violence, asking for Your comfort and healing for all who suffer in body, mind, and spirit. May You grant them strength, protection, and hope for better days, bring justice to all peoples, and establish Your love and peace in the hearts of all, for You are a gracious and compassionate Lord.

In this post-Centennial year, as we continue to carry the wounds inflicted on our ancestors and our nation, we place in You our faith and hope as we persist in our noble cause with the solidarity of friends such as the honorable members of the California State Legislature. We take this time to convey to them our gratitude for taking the time each year to pay homage to our holy martyrs and to all our friends in public office for standing on the side of the Armenian people. May You bless them abundantly for their principled stand and strengthen the will of all those who fight for truth, justice, and righteousness.

Lord Almighty we thank You for the privilege of living in this great nation we are proud to call home where we enjoy the virtues of liberty, justice, equality, and security, and we pray for a kinder and gentler world where all peoples of all faiths and ethnicities can live as we do, in peace, love, and fraternity.

May the souls of all victims of man’s inhumanity to man rest in peace, and may You keep us all in peace under Your loving care and mercy, we beseech You.—AMEN.

our refuge age after age.
Before the mountains were born,

To You, a thousand years are a single day,
a yesterday now over, an hour of the night.

Teach us to count how few days we have
and so gain wisdom of heart.
Take pity on Your servants!

Let us wake in the morning filled with Your love
and sing and be happy all our days;
make our future as happy as our past was sad,
those years when You seemed to be punishing us.

Let Your servants see what You can do for us,
let our children see Your glory.
May the sweetness of the Lord be on us!
Make all we do succeed. --AMEN.

Give us the strength to accomplish the seemingly impossible with limited time, energy, and resources.

Help us to be especially sensitive to the needs of those on the margins, those who are vulnerable, those who are close to despair.

As we center ourselves in God’s holy presence, I’d like to read from a poem by Mexican poet Coral Bracho:

From This Light

That delicate flame—eternity—is falling, slanting, on this light.

From this garden, so composed; from this shadow, eternity lifts its latch onto time
and, there in it, objects are magnetized.
They sink themselves in deeper, and it holds them, then renders them back like this:
very clear, full, abundant.

Breezy, brim-ful of their own sunny selves, their festival glory,…
Solid and separate, they bring places,
time and space together, those neat little gardens,
so that we can feel them fully.

Like perfectly-placed stones
in a garden.

Like time’s blueprint,
overlaid on a temple….

Loving God, as we are poised today between time and eternity, in this Garden of Eden, may our presence radiate lightness and festivity even as our slanting light sometimes casts shadows.  May we know wholeness and holiness in this mysterious space. — AMEN.

Gracious and loving God, we know we may speak plainly to You because of Your intimacy with our every thought. You are completely familiar with our life: our successes, our failures, and our frailty. None of us is made of stone or steel, of alabaster or ivory. We are people of flesh and blood, flesh that carries scars, and blood that pulses with passion to bring truth, justice, and prosperity to the people we serve. You know us well—far better than we know ourselves. So in Your presence we need not be formal. Beloved Mystery, then, be near. Without our faith in Your caring, we would lack the hope that helps us continue, day in and day out, building on the successes, and failures too, of those who have preceded us. We continue to trust in You. —AMEN.

Once upon a time, in a remote unfriendly village by a mountain, there lived an old woman whose habits seemed strange to her neighbors. Often they would see her wandering on the mountainside which looked bleak and barren.  Despite their parents’ admonitions, the children sometimes followed the old woman asking her what she was doing. She would tell them, “I am changing the face of the mountain.”

Many years later, when one grown child returned to show her family the harsh environment of her youth, she was surprised to find the mountainside ablaze with colorful flowers and shady foliage.

She asked the villagers what happened to the bleak and barren mountain.  One replied, “Remember the crazy woman wandering around the mountainside?  It was she who planted all the seeds, and now they are bearing fruit.”  And then she understood the meaning of the words: “changing the face of the mountain.”

So, gracious God, we ask your continued blessing on all the members of this legislature, as they work to change the face of their mountain.  May they persevere with hope and courage, transforming possibilities into reality.  We ask this in Your name.—AMEN.

Life is tough.

It takes a lot of your time, all your weekends,

And what do you get at the end of it?

Death—a great reward.

I think that the life cycle is all backwards

You should die first, get it out of the way.

Then you live twenty years in an old-age home.

You are kicked out when you are too young.

You get a gold watch; then you go to work.

You work forty years until you’re young enough to enjoy your retirement

You go to college,

And you party until you’re ready for high school.

You become a little kid, you play, you have no responsibilities.

You become little boy or girl.

You go back into the womb,

And you spend your last nine months floating.

Until you finish off as a gleam in someone’s eye.

There is a true story of an American man that wanted to explore Africa with the local people. He asked the elders to walk ten miles with him. They agreed. The next day he asked them to walk twenty miles. They agreed. The third day, he was so excited with everything he had seen, he asked the people to walk another twenty miles with him. On this day, they disagreed. They said, “We will not walk with you today, but we will walk with you tomorrow. For today, we are waiting for our souls to catch up to our bodies.”

Let us pray: Gracious and loving God, we pray for all Californians who feel the strain of never being able to catch up. We pray for those who struggle with trying to make ends meet. We pray for those who are exhausted and weary over health issues. We pray for those who are present, but not fully present. Lord God, we pray for rest and restoration. We pray for our California senators today and for the deliberations that will take place in these chambers. May they help ease the burden and weariness of all Californians around this great state so that their way of living will bring life and not strife, hope and not despair, promise and not dejection. Lord God, help us all to be fully present to Your Presence.—AMEN.

Out of the One,

Thou, God, hast spun

All of the races of men.

By thy great Law

Do thou now draw

All to their God Source again.

Take away hate;

By love abate

All mankind's vicious intent.

Show thy great pow'r

Every hour

Of love and compassion God sent.

I AM, I AM, I AM

Diving love sending forth

The wonderful feeling of true divine Healing,

Unguents of Light now sealing

All of the schisms of men.

Stop all division!

By God-precision

Love is the hallowed law-key.

Ultimate peace,

Make all war cease,

Let the children of men now go free!

Stop mankind's friction,

All their predictions

Tearing bless'd heart from heart.

By God-direction

Produce now perfection

In thy great family—one heart.

In the 7th century, Buddhist monk, Hui Neng (638-713) said “The meaning of life is to see.” In our current day, cosmologist Brian Swimme says, “This must be a central facet of human existence—to have the truth right in front of us and yet be unable to…recognize it.” So today, we pray:

Gracious and loving God, We thank  You for the gift of sight and insight that give depth and meaning to our lives.

Slow us down that we may see the beauty that surrounds us—under the blue sky, and in the face of each person we meet.

Help us to see beyond appearances to the mystery and potential in all of creation.

Give us vision and wisdom to recognize the negative effects of fear and self-interest, as we continue to actively look for opportunities to serve the common good.

Gracious God, we trust that  You see deeply into our hearts and love what  You see.—AMEN.

Let us place ourselves in the presence of Divine Mystery, as I read a poem by Sudka Kristmukti from India.  It is called “More than Enough.”

“Something is better than nothing,” I say to myself.

Still another voice persists [and questions]:

“Will my gift, which appears so meager, count amidst this sea of other offerings?”

I ache with doubt.

And yet I saw how my leaking faucet filled a bucket last night- one drop at a time.

More isn’t always the most, and less isn’t always the least.

Approachability. Availability. Dependability.

Listening ears.  Understanding heart.

Words of encouragement,

Being present when it matters most.

Selflessness and the gift of self.

If the smallest act of even one life becomes significant enough,

It might just make a world of difference.

The endless possibilities lie with the One

Who can use the whole of what we think is merely a mite, a part.

Here and now, if we simply present

Whatever we are, whatever we can, whatever we have,

Somehow it will be more than enough,

More than worthwhile.

Something is better than nothing.

And nothing is worse than nothing at all.

As we center ourselves in God’s presence, let us pray that we may not be overcome by our fears; rather, that we may live with confidence into our ever-evolving potential for greatness and goodness, for as Marianne Williams says:

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people will not feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously [inspire] others to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

I’ve been asked to come here this morning, God, to offer something of an Invocation—to invoke Your Great Spirit in this room, in this time, in this place. But Holy One, we know in our heart of hearts that You are already here.

So instead of a time of invocation, let us use this moment as a time of awareness—true awareness and humble recognition of Your Presence already here—within us, amongst us, and beyond us, in every moment. Just like my Sunday school teacher taught me, You are as close to us as breathing, and as distant as the farthest star.

So I ask You now, God, just to remind these good people that You are here. Remind them of Your Presence, and of Your call upon their lives. Remind them of all the good people of California who depend on them each and every day, who pray for them and bless them, and who rely on their good work.

And please remind this gathered body, God, in all they do, to do what is required of them. In the words of Your mighty prophet Micah: “To seek justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with You.”—AMEN.

By way of an invocation, let me share a poem by Thomas P. Ryan, CSP, entitled “Morning Magic.” So settle back now, picturing yourself at Donner Lake, in the silence that prevails, just before the sun rises, and awakens all creation.

I woke this morning

To the summoning sound

Of an immense stillness

Which held all creation bound.

I quietly left my bed

Stepping softly to the shore,

Afraid to wake the universe.

Asleep before me laid the lake,

Held in the mountain’s firm embrace;

The breeze, too, lay quietly in the wings.

Not daring to mar lady water’s face.

And, while all looked away, awaiting another,

—tell no one of this! —

I woke the world myself,

Diving into the lake, full of bliss

Senators, staff, and guests, may you each “dive” into this new day with bliss and thanksgiving for a Divine Creation, so present around us at this flourishing time of year. May we take the time to honor the beauty and harmony of the Divine Handiwork of Summer, and draw fresh, new energy from it, taking us mindfully through this day.—AMEN.

In the 14th century, Julian of Norwich wrote the following: “And all shall be well. And all shall be well. And all manner of things shall be exceeding well.”

There is a peace that passes understanding—

A peace that need not control.

Though life seems uncertain and random, and chaos is ever present, there is peace.

There is a peace of intuitive knowing

That fits like pieces of a jig-saw puzzle into a coherent whole,

A peace that seeks and finds Peace (with a capital P.)

That Peace is longing to be present in all the world.

That Peace desires nothing more than quiet forgiveness, acceptance and recognition

Of the samenesses and differences that make us human.

When our peace and that Peace connect,

As if God’s hand on the Sistine Chapel finally reaches Adam’s,

Then the world will breathe a sigh of relief,

And the words thank you will reverberate throughout eternity.—AMEN.

Today I will read a poem called “Be a Living Psalm.” As you know, the Book of Psalms is full of prayers of praise and complaint. Let us recognize our ability to do both.

Be a Living Psalm

It matters not. The dialogue, the arguments are not worth the air we expend.

Rather, pick up the empty beer bottle and rumpled week-old newspaper from the sidewalk….

Look into the watery eyes of the homeless person; they may or may not be vacant.

Hold the hand of your partner of [so many years], smile at the faint whistle of air through their nostrils.

Be patient with your impatience with your aged Parents; know that they, too, hate you at times….

Slice the radish paper-thin; spread it fan-like around the white plate. Bless the bread before you eat it.

Know that life shakes herself awake each day- that random pieces will fall into our lap.

Our job is to hold praise and lament with equal regard.

Our job is to be a living psalm.

(Adapted from Jennifer Hoffmann, Spiritual Directors International.)

Gracious and loving God, teach us to hold praise and blame with equal regard. Teach us to be a living psalm.—AMEN.

and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned;

And the flames will not consume you.
For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One.
You are precious and honored in my sight, and I love you.

Gracious and loving God, we know that with You

Nothing is discarded or forgotten.

Like stained glass,

Every jagged piece of our lives that is placed in Your skillful hand

Is joined to the whole in just the place it was made to fill.

And when You are through,

Each broken piece shall catch the Light

And reflect You, the One who is Unquenchable Fire.—AMEN.

As we pray this prayer of Joyce Rupp, let us be consoled that God knows our desires even when they may not always materialize.

Gracious God, Gift of Mercy and Understanding,

Sometimes all my good intentions go sliding down the gutter of responsibilities.

My hopes of deepening prayer get splintered and broken in the chaos of busyness.

My desires to have a quiet haven are swallowed by the jaws of my calendar.

My resolutions to rise earlier, to pray longer, are lost in the blankets of an extra hour of sleep.

And all the while I fuss and fume about this, you look at me and smile.

Are you sending the message that spiritual growth can happen among the very things

That seem to keep me from you?

Are you assuring me that my desire to grow is not lost to you?—AMEN.

Anne Lamott says there are three essential prayers: Help, Thanks, and Wow! And I’m kind of running out of prayers, so I’m using one of hers which she says “will do in a pinch.” So, let us pray:

Dear God,

I am just a mess.

It is all hopeless.

What else is new?

I would be sick of me, if I were you, but miraculously, you are not!

I know I have no control over other people’s lives, and I hate this.

Yet I believe that if I accept this and surrender, you will meet me wherever I am.

Wow! Can this be true?  If so, how about this afternoon, say two-ish?

Thank you in advance for your company and blessings.

You have never once let me down.

May we always trust that our God will never let us down!AMEN

Lord, make us instruments of your peace:
where there is hatred, let us sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
O divine Mystery, grant that we may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.—AMEN.

(Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi)
